“Miss Fitt, you know curiosity gets men killed.”
I grinned. “Then I daresay it’s good I’m a woman.”

There’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia. . . .

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about.

Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper:

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor . . . from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including the maddeningly stubborn yet handsome Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

Do you ever get nervous before rereading a favourite book because the second read might not be as satisfying as the first read? Yep. That was me before rereading Something Strange and Deadly. I absolutely LOVED it when I read it 3 years ago, and I’m so glad to say that this second read did not disappoint!

This book reminds me so much of The Infernal Devices, and if you’ve been following our blog, then you’d know that I [Kyra] am the biggest fan of TID! It’s got the same steampunk vibe, and the Victorian manners and dresses that I love about that genre. I love the language, and the way it was written made me wish that I lived in those times. That’s a hard feat because rational Kyra would NOT want to be alive in those times. Mad props to Susan Dennard for that!

Aside from the writing, I actually really liked the characters! Our main girl, Eleanor, is a headstrong, norm-defiant lady who is not afraid to get in a messy situation. I also really enjoy her banter with Daniel! Spoiler alert: I love Daniel waahhh

Okay, my favourite part is the plot, because YOU HAVE WALKING DEAD PEOPLE AND NECROMANCERS! Okay, I think I’m being a little morbid, but those stories really excite me. It’s not all the time that these plots are executed well, but this is one of those rare times that it has been done nicely.

I promise you, if you are a fan of The Infernal Devices, you HAVE to read this book. It’s not as emotional as TID, but to me that’s also a good thing because TID brings some extreme emotions out of me. I really recommend this book, and I think it’s really fun!

4.5 stars.
