The Well of Ascension. Brandon Sanderson. High Fantasy. 2007. 773 pages. 5 stars
It’s easy to believe in something when you win all the time…The losses are what define a man’s faith.
Cause of Kyra’s death: The Well of Ascension
Vin, the street urchin who has grown into the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and Elend Venture, the idealistic young nobleman who loves her, must build a healthy new society in the ashes of an empire. Three separate armies attack. As the siege tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows.
SO. MUCH. WOW.
If I could just try to explain how I was after finishing this book, I probably looked like this:
I’m literally so ded.
This book has the biggest plot twist I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I can’t even. I was in utter disbelief. I never thought than an author could be evil until I read Brandon Sanderson’s books. AREN’T YOUR CHARACTERS SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR BABIES??!?!!??!!
Apparently not for this dude.
The Well of Ascension takes place one year after The Final Empire. And booooy if you thought that killing the Lord Ruler was the hard part, then you are wrong. I feel so bad for these characters because never have I ever read a book with this big of a mess happening. Never.
This book stressed me out in the best possible way. I was pacing around my house like a madwoman since I had to put down the book and try to comprehend what was happening several times because what was happening to my favorite characters was unreal. (It’s a high fantasy book, things like that happen. I know. But it’s by far the most epic of fantasy books I’ve ever read so I did not know that things like this could ever happen to book characters and I was so hurt and worried) Tbh I just want the best for my faves. 😦
In terms of pacing and plot, this was very different from the first book since we’re rebuilding a new government. It was quite slow in the first few hundred pages, but I promise you it picks up, and it gets so much better. The growth of the characters is tremendous, especially that of Elend. We also got to know more of the characters and their motivations. I especially felt for Breeze and Spook.
I cannot recommend the first two Mistborn books enough, and l look forward to reading The Hero of Ages!! I just found out that Mistborn will be FOUR series long so I am definitely gonna go for the second series once I’m done with this one. Brandon Sanderson is such a genius :((
This book deserves all the stars.
