Helen Scheuerer is a YA fantasy author from Sydney, Australia. Heart of Mist is the first book in her high fantasy trilogy, The Oremere Chronicles. It explores themes of identity, belonging, loyalty, addiction, loss, and responsibility. After writing literary fiction for a number of years, novels like Throne of Glass, Elantris, The Queen’s Poisoner and The Queen of the Tearling inspired Helen to return to her childhood love of fantasy.

Helen is also the Founding Editor of Writer’s Edit (www.writersedit.com), an online literary magazine and learning platform for emerging writers. In its first year, Writer’s Edit reached thousands of new authors, and soon became its own small press, with Helen overseeing the production and publication of three creative writing anthologies, Kindling Volume I, Volume II and Volume III. It’s now one of the largest writers’ platforms in the world.

Without further ado, let’s get this book tag started!

BLEAK: Pick an underdog

Celaena Sardothien from Throne of Glass is definitely an underdog I love to cheer on. Particularly when she’s fresh out of Endovier and you start to see her regain her strength and determination against all odds!

K:

20821111

Adelina from The Young Elites was a product of her upbringing and circumstance and she didn’t deserve all the hate 😦 she just wanted to be loved 😦

N:

32051572

Carys from Dividing Eden was underestimated by her own twin brother. I’m ready for her to show everyone what she’s truly made of in Book 2.

VALIAN KINDRED: Pick a book with strong heroines

H:

16069030

I definitely loved Kestrel from the Winner’s Curse trilogy. She wasn’t a born warrior or fighter, but she’s incredibly intelligent, and her characterisation and development throughout the series was wonderful. She came across as a truly strong heroine!

K:

13206900

The entire Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer tbh, but you really get to see the entire lineup of strong heroines in Winter!! Shoutout to Cress though because you really see her face some tough stuff!!

N:

32768509

This book is driven by strong women who know what it’s like to lose their power and I loved every page of it.

MAZ: Pick your most hated book character

H:

3

Umbridge. Hands down. And I don’t think I’m alone there! Rowling made us hate Umbridge with a passion…

K:

99 days

Molly from 99 Days because she is a cheater!!!!! Never have I ever wanted to stab someone that badly ohmygoodness

N:

13206900

Levana from The Lunar Chronicles. Oh my god, the amount of times I wanted to scream because she kept my favorites from their happy ending. AAAAAAAAA.

OLENA AND DASH: Pick your favorite book best friends

H:

20764879

I really loved the relationship between Alucard and Lila Bard in the A Darker Shade of Magic series by V.E. Schwab. Their banter is so so well-written, and I just love how the reader is shown how much they mean to each other through what they don’t say.

K:

7171637

WILL AND JEM WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE BEST BROMANCE PARABATAI 5EVER FIGHT ME

N:

ignite-me

Juliette and Kenji from the Shatter Me series. I saw their friendship grew firsthand, and these two have a special place in my heart.

ATHENE: Pick a passionate character

H:

10964

Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Besides the fact that he’s an absolute babe, he’s also incredibly passionate about his loyalty to Scotland, to his clan and to his wife Claire Fraser. While sometimes his unwavering passion for his various causes makes you want to shake him by the shoulders, it’s also incredibly admirable.

K:

cinder

Literally Cinder because I’ve never seen someone so passionate to save a planet she has barely known was hers

N:

Cleo from the Falling Kingdoms series. Her journey as a strong and passionate heroine has come a long way and I am rooting for her 100%.

HENRI: Pick the most powerful book character you know

H:

22055262

Kell from A Darker Shade of Magic (can you tell I love this series?). He’s incredibly powerful and is one of the few people who can travel through the various Londons in Schwab’s trilogy. I also like the fact that he’s still a flawed character, and that his mistakes have terrifying consequences.

K:

18490585

Vin because she is a MISTBORN!!!!! (Please read this book if you haven’t huhuhu it’s so good)

N:

31451174

Amren from A Court of Wings and Ruin. I know Rhysand is the “most powerful High Lord in history”, but gods, did we ever consider Amren in her true form? She. Is. Unstoppable.

FIORE: Pick an underrated minor character

H:

18712886

Lazarus from the Queen of the Tearling series. I’m yet to read the third and final book in this trilogy but I particularly loved his character arc in Book II The Invasion of the Tearling.

K:

a little

I’m horrible because I really can’t think of anyone right now so I’m gonna say the bench and the squirrel in A Little Something Different because it was really funny reading from the POV of a bench and a squirrel :((

N:

22055262

Alucard Emery deserved more chapters dedicated to him.
