“You deserve every star in the galaxy laid out at your feet and a thousand diamonds in your hair. You deserve someone who’ll run with you as far and as fast as you want to. Holding your hand, not holding you back.”

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Calling all aesthetic lovers and sci-fi fans!!!! This book is for you!!! Told from epistolary form with its visually pleasing cover, Illuminae has swept me off my feet and took me on a ride that was so out of this world.

What do I mean about visually pleasing cover?

Look at how beautiful this cover is. If you like reading without the sleeve on, like myself, it’s completely okay because the naked book IS JUST AS BEAUTIFUL.

In terms of its epistolary form, I was actually afraid at how I’ll be able to keep up without narration and dialogue but I was surprised at how easy I found it is to understand and grasp its concepts and plot! So don’t fear if you think you won’t be able to understand it–it’s surprisingly easy!

I also took it upon myself to listen to its audiobook and it’s just as amazing! Props to the crew who really put a lot of effort to make the audiobook sound as interstellar as the book looked.

Audiobook or hardcopy, I give both 5 stars. Pick it up. Read it. You won’t regret it.

Quotes I liked from the book:

“I am frequently underestimated. I think it’s because I’m short.”
Amie Kaufman, Illuminae

“You have me. Until ever last star in the galaxy dies. You have me.”
Amie Kaufman, Illuminae

“I should have told you I loved you every day. I should have given you the stars.”
Amie Kaufman, Illuminae

“since i will not send this, i also feel it is my duty to inform you that almost six months on I think I still love you and that makes me sad becaue love shouldn’t feel this way. is like getting kicked in the stomach every time i think of you and it makes me want to roll my face across this keyboardbiu;///ubEWdcfhugiov’byhi;.//////-=‘-0i9juh8ygtfdcsaazs34defg7uefg7u8hi9o0p8hi9o0p-[[09ju8dcsaazs34d9o0p-[[09.”
